Community College Month

April is Community College Month! Community College Month was established to bring awareness to the benefits of two-year colleges. This month, we are highlighting our University Transfer programs, which offer an affordable path from associate degree to a bachelor’s degree.

Mid-State’s University Transfer program offers students the option of either Liberal Arts-Associate of Arts or Liberal Arts-Associate of Science degree, both designed for students to seamlessly transfer their credits to many four-year colleges and universities in Wisconsin. For a fraction of the cost, students enjoy the full college experience of student clubs and organizations, residence hall living options, study abroad opportunities, and more.

Gabby Raczek

Graduate, Liberal Arts-Associate of Arts

“Once I was finished, I was able to transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point without any troubles to pursue a major in elementary education.”

Gabby graduated from the Liberal Arts-Associate of Arts program in the summer of 2021. Upon graduating, she enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Elementary Education program and will earn her bachelor’s degree in December.

While attending Stevens Point Area High School, Gabby took advantage of the dual credit opportunities to earn college credits. She transferred these credits to a private four-year college in Illinois after graduating from high school in 2019. Her father was diagnosed with cancer shortly after she moved, and she made the decision to withdraw and move back home to Stevens Point to spend more time with her dad. He passed away in November of that year.

Gabby dreamed of becoming a teacher but “wasn’t sure that going back to Illinois was the best plan.” She learned about the University Transfer program at Mid-State and decided to enroll to get started on general education credits that she could transfer to UW-Stevens Point. “Once I was finished, I was able to transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point without any troubles to pursue a major in elementary education,” says Gabby. Because the transfer was seamless, I am able to graduate with a bachelor's degree.”

Gabby really enjoyed here time in the program. “The staff were all extremely helpful, not only with helping me get enrolled but also with helping me pick the classes that were right for me,” she says. With the way the program was set up I was able to know exactly what I needed to do.”

Kaden Jackson

Kaden Jackson

Current Student, Liberal Arts-Associate of Arts

“Choosing Mid-State was one of the best things I have done with my life.”

Kaden is a current Liberal Arts-Associate of Arts student with plans to graduate in 2025. He has already been accepted to Marquette University’s Military History program and will transfer there upon graduating from Mid-State.

Graduating from Wausau West High School, Kaden wouldn’t describe himself as “the best student” and didn’t know what he wanted to do with his future. He looked into Mid-State’s University Transfer programs after encouragement from his sister and took a chance by coming in to discuss the program with an advisor. He knew right away that Mid-State was the right place for him. “Choosing Mid-State was one of the best things I have done with my life,” says Kaden.

Kaden’s dream career is to become a museum curator or museum director. However, since starting at Mid-State, he has been inspired to explore other career paths from the example of his lecturers. “The lecturers I had to this point at Mid-State made me consider teaching because they were all amazing,” says Kaden. “They motivated me, and I would like to potential do that to future students as well.”

Along with his lecturers, Kaden’s Mid-State advisor, Diane Andres, has been instrumental in setting him up for success. When reflecting on his experience in the University Transfer program Kaden says, “It has been great, and I know the program will continue to succeed and grow.”
