Person Driving a Semi Truck

Employer Training - CDL Class A

Mid-State’s customized truck driving (CDL Class A) training program is currently only available for incumbent workers. This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to become safe, professional drivers of automatic commercial motor vehicles. Manual transmission training is not available at this time.

This program emphasizes hands-on learning to teach and develop safe driving techniques, turning, inspections, and common to unusual backing maneuvers. Online materials are used to provide a solid foundation in the industry-related issues drivers face. Mid-State does not offer an open enrollment, public course at this time

Steps to Complete the CDL Training Program

  1. Complete the interest form.
  2. Provide proof of a Federal Medical (FedMed) card. This is issued after you complete a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical with a registered, certified medical examiner. You will receive information on where to send this after you complete the interest form.
  3. Complete a DOT Drug Screening (can be completed during your FedMed card appointment). Students will also be subject to pre-enrollment drug and alcohol screening, as well as random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident screenings.
  4. Obtain your Commercial Drivers Learner’s Permit (CLP) at the DMV. Study guides are available online. Three tests are required for Class A.
  5. Once the above steps are complete, Mid-State will arrange for a pre-training assessment. You will then be enrolled in the training.
  6. Complete the online CDL Theory course at your own pace (approximately 16 hours).
  7. Schedule customized behind the wheel training (approximately 30 hours). The schedule will be set once you are accepted into the program.
  8. Complete the Behind the Wheel test with our third-party examiner.
