Mid-State to host free Fire Academy event with demos, food and career exploration
Mid-State Technical College invites high school students, parents, community members and anyone curious about fire safety or fire protection careers to attend its upcoming Fire Up Your Future: Fire Academy Experience Day. The event takes place Tuesday, August 12, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wisconsin Rapids Campus.
This interactive, family-friendly event offers a first-hand look at Mid-State’s Fire Service Training Academy and the exciting, grant-funded and tuition-supported opportunities available for future firefighters.
Attendees will enjoy free brats and hotdogs, live fire demonstrations from local partnering fire departments and the chance to explore careers in fire protection. Free program applications will be available at the event, and qualifying high school students in South Wood County may receive free tuition through a Legacy Foundation grant.
“This event is more than just a look at our program—it’s about building the future of our community’s fire protection workforce,” said Rick Anderson, dean of Protective Services at Mid-State. “We’re working to fill the skilled worker pipeline while also giving high school students the opportunity to earn real, career-ready credentials before they even graduate. It’s a win for students, families and our communities.”
In addition to career exploration, the event provides a timely opportunity for community members to learn important fire safety tips ahead of the Labor Day weekend—a time when fire-related incidents tend to increase due to outdoor celebrations like cookouts and campfires.
As an added bonus, everyone who registers by August 8 will receive a free event T-shirt upon check-in.
Whether you're a student exploring a high-demand career, a parent supporting your teen’s future or a community member looking to boost your fire safety knowledge, this event has something for you.
