June 17, 2025

Mid-State Technical College is offering a new Substance Use Disorder Counselor (SUDC) associate degree. Applications are now being accepted for the 67-credit program.

Mid-State’s Substance Use Disorder Counselor program is a two-year associate in applied science (AAS) designed for individuals interested in working with addiction issues. Graduates are qualified to become substance abuse counselors with the ability to understand the underlying causes of addiction and help patients learn coping strategies and recognize their unique triggers.

Students in the program develop skills in counseling, diagnosis of addiction issues, treatment planning, group facilitation and crisis management. Graduates are prepared for entry-level work in facilities such as clinics, hospitals, community residential facilities and various community and social services agencies.

"The Substance Use Disorder Counselor program will open avenues for students and have a positive impact upon people's lives," said Rick Anderson, dean of the School of Public Safety. "We look forward to producing graduates from this program to meet the demand for substance use counseling services in our communities."
