New HVAC-R program now offered at Mid-State
Mid-State Technical College is offering a new Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) Technician associate in applied science program. Applications are now being accepted for the 60-credit program.
Mid-State’s HVAC-R program students learn to install, maintain and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems in residential, commercial and industrial settings. This includes the ability to diagnose system issues, identify faulty components and apply effective repair solutions as well as calibrate and optimize HVAC systems for energy efficiency, airflow and performance. Students will also understand and work safely with electrical wiring, circuits and control systems that power HVAC units and gain expertise in handling refrigerants, including EPA-certified safe disposal and adherence to environmental regulations.
The program includes hands-on work to help students gain proficiency with industry-standard tools such as gauges, vacuum pumps and multimeters. Students also participate in practical training to simulate real-world scenarios, including system installation, repairs and inspections.
“Mid-State’s new HVAC-R program was developed in direct response to feedback from local employers who emphasized the urgent need for skilled technicians in this high-demand field,” said Mid-State Dean of Applied Technology Brigitta Altmann-Austin. “We’re proud to deliver a hands-on, industry-informed program that prepares students for meaningful, well-paying careers while supporting the workforce needs of our region.”
“I am excited that Mid-State is providing a HVAC-R Technician degree program,” said Ryan Kraft, area service manager for Bassett Mechanical, a Wisconsin- and Minnesota-based company with roots in the HVAC-R industry going back to the 1980s. “The demand for HVAC service technicians in central Wisconsin is high, and hiring the correct candidate can be a challenge. A local program opportunity that supports this growing industry is great for Bassett as well as other HVAC-R service contractors in the area.”
