Mid-State’s Andrew Dewitt receives statewide safety award
Mid-State Technical College Director of Safety & Security Andrew Dewitt has been named a recipient of the J. Timothy Greene Risk Impact Award, recognizing outstanding leadership in campus safety and risk management across the Wisconsin Technical College System.
Presented by Districts Mutual Insurance (DMI), the award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to safety, often through behind-the-scenes efforts that create safer learning environments.
Dewitt was recognized for his leadership in advancing a proactive, campus-wide approach to safety at Mid-State. Over the past several years, he has led and collaborated on initiatives that strengthen emergency preparedness, improve security systems and support the well-being of students and employees.
Key efforts include standardizing door numbering across campuses to improve emergency response communication, expanding secure card access in classrooms, labs and faculty spaces and increasing video surveillance to enhance incident prevention and response. Dewitt also led the transition to a new emergency alert system that delivers messages through phones, text, email, digital displays and outdoor speakers.
Additional improvements include updated classroom safety maps identifying evacuation routes, shelter areas, AEDs and Narcan locations, as well as DMI-funded safety upgrades such as roof hatch railings, skylight protections and mezzanine safety gates. He also strengthened the College’s student security program through increased visibility, training and expanded coverage.
“This award is especially meaningful because it comes from peers who understand the importance of safety work that often goes unnoticed,” said Dewitt. “I’m honored to be recognized and to be part of a community that prioritizes doing the right thing to keep people safe.” He added that the progress made at Mid-State reflects strong collaboration across departments, with teams working together to turn safety priorities into action.
Dewitt has been with Mid-State for 4.5 years and has served as Director of Safety & Security for the past two years. He received the award April 23 at the DMI Conference.
Mid-State Technical College congratulates Dewitt on this achievement and his continued leadership in fostering a safe campus environment.
