Angel Laidlaw named Mid-State Technical College 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient
Mid-State Technical College has named Angel Laidlaw, president and CEO of Centergy, Inc., as its 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
“Angel’s story is a powerful example of the transformative impact of technical education,” said Nikki Dhein, Foundation & Alumni director. “Her leadership, commitment to community and continued partnership with Mid-State truly embody what this award represents. We are honored to recognize her accomplishments and the many ways she continues to strengthen our region.”
A non-traditional student, Laidlaw began her career in hospitality before transitioning to marketing. While working full time at the Portage County Business Council, she enrolled in Mid-State’s Marketing program—an experience she describes as a pivotal moment in her career.
Mid-State’s flexible structure allowed Laidlaw to balance work, education and personal commitments. Her enthusiasm and initiative soon helped shape the program’s evolution into what is now the College’s Digital Marketing degree. Upon graduating, she advanced to marketing and communications director at the Business Council, where she discovered her passion for regional economic development and business growth.
That passion led Laidlaw to take on greater leadership roles, first as president and CEO of the Heart of Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce and now as president and CEO of Centergy, Inc., a regional nonprofit driving economic prosperity across five central Wisconsin counties.
Under Laidlaw’s leadership, Centergy has spearheaded major initiatives including the national Central to Success talent attraction campaign, new regional broadband and housing studies and expanded advocacy efforts across the state. Her collaborative approach connects key regional priorities—economic development, workforce readiness, housing and quality of life—creating tangible impact for central Wisconsin communities.
“Mid-State was a turning point for me,” Laidlaw said. “It gave me the confidence and the skills to step into leadership roles and to see how education and economic development are deeply connected. I’m proud to represent the College and the Wisconsin Technical College System wherever I go.”
In addition to her professional achievements, Laidlaw is active in numerous organizations, including Rotary, Ignite Young Professionals, the Wisconsin Economic Development Association Board of Directors and Opportunity Development Centers, where she serves as vice chair. She also contributes her expertise to Mid-State as a member of several program advisory committees.
Each year, Mid-State confers its Distinguished Alumni Award to an exceptional graduate who demonstrates outstanding professional achievement, community involvement, advocacy for technical education and a commitment to lifelong learning.
“Angel’s impact extends far beyond her own career,” Dhein said. “She exemplifies the spirit of lifelong learning and community leadership that defines Mid-State alumni everywhere.”
