Free event encourages open conversations, connection and hope for recovery
Mid-State Technical College will host John Mabry, a nationally recognized keynote speaker on mental health, addiction and resilience, on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center of Wisconsin Rapids. The event is free and open to the public.
A former Hollywood actor with roles in “NCIS”, “ER” and “Superbad”, Mabry holds a master's degree in counseling and shares his personal experience with alcoholism and addiction. His journey, including the loss of his brother to a drug overdose, offers a message of resilience, recovery and hope, and has been featured in People magazine, USA Today and Access Hollywood.
Through his ACT method—Acknowledge, Choose, Tell—Mabry gives audiences a practical first step toward speaking up, seeking help and starting meaningful conversations. His presentation emphasizes compassion, connection and the importance of breaking the silence surrounding mental health and addiction.
“You don't have to be personally struggling with addiction or mental health challenges to benefit from this event,” said Mid-State Manager of Workforce & Professional Development Ashley Borchardt. “Whether you're a parent, friend, coworker or community member, John Mabry's message offers valuable insight into recognizing when someone needs support and knowing how to respond.”
The event is part of Mid-State's ongoing commitment to bringing meaningful conversations to central Wisconsin, creating opportunities for greater understanding, connection and support.
The event is free and open to all community members, made possible through funding from Opioid Settlement grant dollars, awarded by Wood County. Advance registration is required.
