At Mid-State Technical College, students in the Jail Officer Academy do more than learn about corrections. They experience hands-on training designed to prepare them for real careers in county jails and correctional facilities.
The program combines classroom instruction with immersive training that reflects the realities of the field. Inside Mid-State’s specialized lab space, students work in a simulated jail environment complete with a booking area and functioning jail cells.
Students practice real-world scenarios such as intake procedures, communication strategies, subject control, and safety protocols. These experiences help students build confidence while developing the professional skills needed on the job.
“Having a space that mirrors an actual jail setting makes a huge difference,” said Candace Schmidt, Criminal Justice instructor. “Students are applying what they learn in situations they may face in their careers.”
Many students also bring previous experience in corrections or related fields, creating a collaborative learning environment where students learn from instructors and one another.
Strong partnerships with local agencies, including the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, help ensure training stays connected to current industry needs and expectations.
Through simulations and hands-on learning, students strengthen skills in communication, officer wellness, jail safety, and professionalism. These experiences prepare graduates to support safe and secure correctional environments.
