At Mid-State Technical College, students can begin preparing for careers in fire service before high school graduation.

Through the Fire Service Certification Academy, high school juniors and seniors in South Wood County have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications while gaining hands-on experience in emergency services.

Supported by a grant from the Legacy Foundation of Central Wisconsin, Inc., the program helps expand the pipeline of trained firefighters in local communities while creating affordable career pathways for students.

This school-to-work model combines classroom instruction with hands-on training and connections to local fire departments. Students build real-world skills while learning what it takes to serve and protect their communities.

By the time they graduate from high school, students may earn certifications in EMT, Firefighter 1, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Firefighter 2. These credentials can help them qualify for volunteer and paid fire service positions.

“This program gives students a head start on a career where they can make a real difference,” said Rick Anderson, dean of Adams Campus and School of Public Safety. “Students gain real skills, real experience, and real opportunities before graduation.”

Students and families can also explore the program through Mid-State’s Fire Up Your Future experience day. The event features live fire demonstrations, career exploration activities, and opportunities to meet local firefighters and emergency service professionals.

As the demand for skilled firefighters continues to grow, Mid-State’s Fire Service Certification Academy helps prepare the next generation of emergency responders through hands-on training, industry certifications, and strong community partnerships.
