Mid-term degree start and continuing education courses give learners flexible options to build skills, explore interests and make progress before the new year
Missed the traditional August start of the college semester? It’s not too late to get started this fall at Mid-State Technical College.
More than 100 undergraduate course sections begin in October and later this fall, giving students another opportunity to start or continue working toward a college credential without waiting until the spring semester. Students interested in earning a degree can begin any Mid-State associate degree program at mid-term, using available courses to start making progress toward their credential this fall.
“At Mid-State, we know students don’t all start their college journey at the same time,” said Kimberly Valenza, dean of enrollment strategy at Mid-State. “For someone who wasn’t ready to begin in August, mid-term provides another opportunity to get started without waiting until January. Whether they’re ready to pursue a degree or simply want to begin with one class, we can help them find a path that works for their goals and their life.”
Mid-State’s fall mid-term offerings span general education, business, technology, manufacturing, health care, public safety, agriculture, construction and skilled trades, with online, in-person and hybrid options available.
Examples of undergraduate courses starting this fall include:
- General education: English Composition I, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Speech and Written Communication.
- Business and leadership: Accounting I, Marketing Principles, Project Management, Leadership Development and Human Resource Management.
- Technology and manufacturing: Intro to Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Industrial Robotics and a variety of automation, CNC, welding and fabrication courses.
- Health and public safety: Medical Terminology, Mental Wellness and Stress Management, Criminal Investigation and a variety of health sciences courses.
- Agriculture, construction and skilled trades: Intro to Soil Science, Principles of Crop Management, and a variety of construction, HVAC, automotive, diesel and arboriculture courses.
For those who aren’t looking to earn a degree, Mid-State also offers short-term Continuing Education classes throughout the fall, providing opportunities to strengthen workplace skills, explore new interests or simply learn something new.
Upcoming offerings include:
- Pumpkins and Can-O-Lanterns – Oct. 8, AMETA® Center: Get hands-on experience with plasma cutting, metal forming and basic welding while creating seasonal metal art.
- Cake Decorating for Beginners – Oct. 14, Marshfield Campus: Learn basic cake decorating and frosting techniques while creating a finished cake to take home.
- Leadership & Followership: Responsible Use of Power to Influence – Oct. 21, Adams Campus: Explore leadership, followership and how the responsible use of influence can build trust and strengthen teams.
- Mental Health First Aid Certificate – Nov. 5, Stevens Point Downtown Campus: Learn to recognize and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges and how to connect someone with appropriate help.
- Baking Essentials for Beginners – Nov. 30–Dec. 14, Wisconsin Rapids Campus: Build confidence in the kitchen through three hands-on sessions covering cookies, quick breads and yeast breads.
“Starting college doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing decision,” Valenza said. “Taking one class can be that first step. With more than 100 course sections starting in October and later this fall, students have options to begin making progress now and build from there.”
