Pregnant and Parenting Students

Pregnant and Parenting Students

Mid-State Technical College is committed to supporting student success for all students.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery from any of these conditions and requires an educational institution to excuse a student’s absences because of pregnancy and related conditions for as long as the student’s doctor deems them medically necessary (34. C.F. R §106.40(b)).

Additionally, Title IX prohibits discrimination based on parental status.  Students who are parents are protected from discrimination under parental status (34. C.F. R. § 106.40(a)).

What types of accommodations may I request?
Specific accommodations will vary from student to student. Examples of accommodations may include:

  • A larger desk
  • Breaks during class
  • A stool or chair instead of standing
  • Rescheduling tests or exams
  • Requesting incompletes
  • Excused absences due to pregnancy or related conditions (both male and female)
  • Submitting work after a deadline missed due to pregnancy or childbirth
  • Accommodations involving clinical sites will be determined on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the academic department
  • Alternative course materials if necessary

How do I request accommodations?
Accommodation requests should be directed Patti Lloyd in Disability Services.  Patti can be contacted at Patti.Lloyd@mstc.edu or to schedule an appointment 715.422.5300.

How are accommodations determined to be reasonable?
Accommodations are determined in conjunction with the student, Disability Services, the instructor, and any appropriate medical personnel and are based on reasonable academic adjustments.  Course learning outcomes cannot be altered to meet the needs of the students.

What if I do not want accommodations and want to continue in classes?
It is your right to determine if you want to disclose a pregnancy.  We do find that most students appreciate the resources provides in Student Services such as counseling, academic advising, tutoring, and others in continuing their degree.
