Sustainable Heating & Cooling Technician

Sustainable Heating & Cooling Technician

Associate in Applied Science (AAS)

If you’ve ever experienced a system failure during a heatwave or winter storm, you know how crucial air conditioning and heating are to our comfort, productivity, and safety. Controlling the air quality in homes, schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings falls to the skilled technicians working in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning).

A Closer Look

Heating and cooling systems are never safe from breaking down, and many homes and facilities are limping along with aging and inefficient technology. Skilled HVAC professionals travel to these worksites, follow installation blueprints, connect fuel and water lines, install electrical wiring, and maintain and inspect systems. They also repair or replace worn or defective parts.

Sustainable HVAC technicians are also experts on installing and maintaining sustainable systems that run on solar thermal, geothermal, biomass, and radiant energy, skills that are in ever-increasing demand.

What You'll Learn

Graduates of the Sustainable Heating and Cooling Technician program have the skills needed to design, install, operate, and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning/refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems.

Students in the program gain hands-on experience in the installation of both traditional and cutting-edge systems in both residential and commercial applications. The program places a strong emphasis on the most modern and efficient techniques, such as solar thermal, geothermal, biomass, radiant, and low-temperature heat delivery systems and high-efficiency furnaces and boilers.

  • Controls Technician
  • Geothermal Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Technician
  • Heat Load Estimator
  • HVAC/R Installation, Maintenance, and Service Technician
  • Pre-Apprentice/Laborer
  • Renewable Energy Site Assessor
  • Solar Thermal Installation, Maintenance, and Service Technician
  • Technical Sales Representative

Your Instructors

The instructors in the Sustainable Heating and Cooling Technician program bring the right balance of professional experience and teaching expertise to the classroom. Meet our full-time faculty!

In one way or another, Mike has been working with electricity for over 20 years. He has experience as an electronics technician, an electric meter technician, and an instrumentation technician. He earned his bachelor’s degree from UW-Stevens Point.

“I want students to see me not as an authority, but as a guide whose task is to help them discover their strengths and weaknesses and act on them accordingly. This gives them skills that will help them throughout their lives.”

Benjamin earned his bachelor’s degree from University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and has over 10 years of experience installing and designing renewable energy systems. He is also vice president of the board of directors of the Midwest Renewable Energy Association and co-authored the book Solar Water Heating: A Comprehensive Guide to Solar Water and Space Heating Systems. Benjamin lives in a solar-powered home he built himself.

“I love what I do and am excited to spend each day empowering students to better themselves and to change the world.”
