Court Reporting

Court Reporting

Associate in Applied Science (AAS)

The sight of someone hammering away on the oddly shaped keys of a stenograph machine tells you there is a court reporter in the room. It also signals a serious situation that demands a verbatim record of what is said. Because of their impartiality and role to safeguard the legal process, court reporters are considered important guardians of the record during pretrial and trial proceedings.

A Closer Look

Today’s court reporters use a computerized stenographic captioning machine and other high-tech equipment. After creating a shorthand record of every word spoken during a court or deposition proceeding, they prepare verbatim transcripts that become the official record. Using the latest technology, some court reporters also provide real-time access to what is being said during a trial or deposition for the benefit of all involved parties.

Far from being limited to working in the courts, court reporters now also find a wealth of professional opportunities in the fields of closed and real-time captioning services, webcasting, and Communications Access Realtime (CART) reporting.

What You'll Learn

Mid-State’s Court Reporting program trains students to create word-for-word transcriptions at trials, depositions, and other legal proceedings. The program emphasizes speed, accuracy, and confidentiality.

Core program courses are offered via video conference hosted by Lakeshore Technical College and are supported by select classes available in the Mid-State district. You’ll need to hear, speak, see, and use both hands to manipulate a computer keyboard and stenograph machine. This program is certified by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA).
