Mid-State to offer mushroom cultivation class

March 29, 2017

Topic is one of three in new Spring Garden Series

Mid-State Technical College is offering a continuing education class titled “Mushroom Cultivation” in its new Spring Garden Series for gardening enthusiasts. Participants will enjoy a short primer on the basics of edible mushroom cultivation. Attendees can choose to register for the class offered on Saturday, April 22, in Wisconsin Rapids or the class on Monday, April 24, in Stevens Point. The fee for the class is $38.

“Mushroom Cultivation” un-taps the power of mushroom mycelium, the cobweb-like part of the mushroom responsible for seeking and digesting food. If cultivated properly, mycelium supports the explosive growth of the mushroom cap and stalk—the edible parts. Once gardeners understand this process, they can grow their own mushrooms that are safe to eat. The class includes the opportunity to inoculate a substrate with mushroom spawn and grow their own edible mushrooms.

More details and registration information for “Mushroom Cultivation” and the other offerings in the Spring Garden Series can be found at www.mstc.edu/gardenseries.
