WISCONSIN RAPIDS - During the Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) Board of Directors meeting held Monday evening, the Board heard a report about a proposal to expand programs and facilities in the protective and emergency services areas. According to Dr. Sue Budjac, Vice President of Academic Affairs, information and feedback forums were held in early November to engage a broader level of community participation in the proposed expansion.
Criminal justice departments and agencies, emergency medical service providers, fire departments and businesses that actively address white-collar crimes participated in the forums. "The feedback from the protective and emergency service groups was very favorable. Attendees were pleased to collectively provide and review feedback and communicate on our anticipated building and remodeling" said Dr. Budjac. She said the college will continue to evaluate the strengths and opportunities for the proposed programs and facilities expansion.
In other news, the Board received an update about the Wisconsin Learning Center (WLC) from Doris McAllister, Director of Workforce & Economic Development. The WLC is located in the Portage County Business Park and is a partnership supported by MSTC, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) and the Portage County Business Council Foundation. For the past six years, the WLC has offered high-quality and affordable professional development seminars, contracted services and facility room rentals.
According to McAllister, participation in MSTC offerings at the WLC has steadily risen since 2001. "During our first year, WLC offerings were well received in central Wisconsin and in subsequent years we have averaged about 500 individuals who utilized WLC services." She said this current fiscal year looks to be a successful one as well. "In the past five months, thirteen companies have requested contract training services and twenty professional development seminars have been delivered" said McAllister.
