WISCONSIN RAPIDS - During the Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) Board of Directors meeting held Monday evening, the Board elected officers for fiscal year 2007-08. Joseph Kinsella, Stevens Point, was elected chairperson; Dean Ryerson, Wisconsin Rapids, was elected vice chairperson; Betty Bruski Mallek, Junction City, was elected secretary; and Patrick Costello, Wisconsin Rapids, was elected treasurer.
Board members are appointed by county board supervisors, serve on a voluntary basis and are not paid. The nine-member MSTC Board of Directors is organized to represent employees, employers and the general public at large throughout the district; one member must be a public school administrator and one member an elected official. The Board is responsible for the administration of technical and adult educational programs and services in the district as authorized by the Wisconsin Technical College System Board according to state legislation.
In other action, the Board unanimously approved a one-year extension of the current contract for College President Dr. John Clark. His contract is extended to June 30, 2010.
In other news, the Board heard a report on the upcoming manufacturing academy for high school juniors and seniors. The academy is free of charge and will be held at MSTC's Wisconsin Rapids campus, July 30 through August 2. The goal of the academy is to retain and grow manufacturing businesses by equipping area youth with valuable skills and onsite experiences as they consider careers in manufacturing. According to Dr. Sue Budjac, Vice President of Academic Affairs, there are 12 participants registered with a maximum capacity of 20 allowed for the academy. "Participants will explore manufacturing programs, use cutting-edge technology to create a useable product and tour manufacturing facilities at Del Monte, Pointe Precision and the Stora Enso Stevens Point plant." Dr. Budjac said the benefits of the academy are twofold. "This is an opportunity to show young persons a path to becoming a self-sustaining member of the community while providing local business and industry with a competent workforce."
The next Mid-State Technical College Board of Directors meeting will be held Monday, August 20 at the Wisconsin Rapids campus.
