MSTC Career Events Highlighted During Board Meeting
WISCONSIN RAPIDS – During the Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) Board of Directors meeting held Monday evening, the board heard a report about career services events from Connie Willfahrt, Vice President of Student Affairs & Information Technology. In collaboration with various agencies, educational partners and employers, MSTC is coordinating several events to link students with career opportunities. Willfahrt described upcoming events, both on and off campus, that promote MSTC programs and graduates while assisting students with job seeking strategies. “There are over 50 employers who have registered to participate in tomorrow’s Central Wisconsin Collegiate Job Fair at SentryWorld Sports Center.” She said this job fair is a collaboration between MSTC, UWSP, Northcentral Technical College and the University of Wisconsin Colleges. Willfahrt said a new addition to the job fair will be a counselor from UWSP who will be on hand to answer students’ questions about transfer opportunities.

Exploring Careers in Urban Foresty will be held February 23 and 24 at the College’s Wisconsin Rapids campus. “What’s great about this annual event is the direct information students receive from specific urban forestry employers,” said Willfahrt. “They discuss entry-level expectations and career opportunities with MSTC and UWSP urban forestry students.”

Two additional job fairs MSTC co-sponsors include the Central Wisconsin Job Fairs; one will be held February 28 at the Best Western Convention Center in Marshfield and the other on March 29 at MSTC’s Wisconsin Rapids campus. “To date, the number of attendees at these job fairs has been very strong,” said Willfahrt. “It's an opportunity for a company to meet and screen a large volume of potential job candidates. Whether you're a college student new to the job-hunting process or a seasoned professional, job fairs improve one’s chances of obtaining an interview.”

The newest career fair highlighted by Willfahrt was the World of Corrections Career Day which will be held on Thursday, April 6 at MSTC’s Wisconsin Rapids campus. She said the event is modeled after the successful Urban Forestry Career Days where professionals from the corrections and related fields are invited onsite to interact with students. “When we offer these types of activities, we constantly examine how it is that we work with employers to better connect with our graduates and how do we further help students be successful upon graduation,” said Willfahrt. “Career Fairs help students better understand the needs of employers and they enable employers to directly connect with their potential workforce and communicate industry needs,” she added.

The next Mid-State Technical College Board of Directors meeting will be held on Monday, March 20 at the Wisconsin Rapids campus. Committee meetings are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., with the regular Board meeting beginning at 5:00 p.m.
