MSTC Employee Graduates from Leadership Institute

Denise KinneyMid-State Technical College (MSTC) is pleased to announce Denise Kinney recently graduated from the Wisconsin Leadership Development Institute (WLDI). The year-long program was created in conjunction with the Chair Academy for Leadership and Development to advance organizational leadership in technical and community colleges.
Kinney, Stevens Point, is the College’s student records manager. She began the institute’s program in July 2009 with a week of training that involved individualized professional development plans, a mentoring and coaching program, a three-day session concentrating on the elements of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) and a final week of on-site training reinforcing the leadership principles developed throughout the program year.

Participants are nominated and selected by their individual colleges to attend WLDI. Kinney said her experience was invaluable. “The Wisconsin Leadership Academy provided me with the knowledge and confidence to grow both personally and professionally. I have no doubt that I will continue to draw from the experience as I move forward in my role at MSTC.” Kinney said many WLDI participants came from well beyond Wisconsin’s borders, which enhanced the learning experience. “The opportunity to share perspectives with upcoming leaders in higher education from the WTCS, other colleges from around the U.S., as well as from the Netherlands and Canada created an excellent learning environment.” WLDI participants also spent three days with staff at the WTCS State Office in Madison and at the Capitol with the Executive Director of the WTCS Board Association. “This provided insight into the incredible amount of work and dedication put forth on a daily basis in support of our technical college system,” said Kinney.

During the course of the institute, Kinney addressed topics such as The Complex Role of the Organizational Leader, Building Effective Work Teams, Strategic and Scenario Planning, Managing Conflict, Leading Change, Behavioral Work Styles and Appreciating Diversity.
