Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) will be closed on Fridays during June and July. College campuses in Marshfield, Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids as well as its learning center in Adams will observe summer hours. Detailed campus hours appear at the end of this notice.
According to Richard O’Sullivan, Vice President of Human Resource, the summer schedule will allow the college to best meet the needs of students by increasing staff time Monday through Thursday. “There was little, if any, student traffic or communication on Friday afternoons during previous summer months. Based on feedback, we believe the need for student support on Fridays during the summer is minimal.” O’Sullivan said the campus office hours will expand Monday through Thursday in key support areas such as financial aid, bookstores, enrollment management and counseling. “These areas closely align with our student and customer needs.”
Through the elimination of the Friday commute for MSTC employees, the college estimates there will be a reduction of 1,600 gallons of gasoline expended. This would result in decreases of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon emissions. According to Dr. John Clark, MSTC President, the estimated savings by not cooling the buildings on Fridays will be $25,000. “MSTC is at the forefront in providing and expanding programs in Renewable Energy. Closing our campuses on Fridays during the summer also supports the emphasis of these programs.”
“We will evaluate the impact on students and staff throughout this time period, and if it is determined to have positive results we will consider repeating this scheduling next summer,” said O’Sullivan.
