MSTC Presents: Facebook & MySpace... The Good, Bad and Ugly

WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) will host a lecture at its campuses about students' rights in relation to Facebook and MySpace. The lecture will be presented by attorney C. L. Lindsay. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Facebook and MySpace is open to the public and will be held at various MSTC locations, dates and times as follows:

  • Monday, January 21, Marshfield campus, 2600 West 5th Street - 1 p.m. (Room 126)
  • Monday, January 21, Wisconsin Rapids campus, 500 32nd Street N. - 6:30 p.m. (Auditorium)
  • Tuesday, January 22, Stevens Point campus, 933 Michigan Avenue - 10:00 a.m. (Room 133)
  • Tuesday, January 22, Wisconsin Rapids campus - 2:00 p.m. (Auditorium)

Lindsay will address students' rights, computing privacy and the dangers of online information with potential employers. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Coalition for Student and Academic Rights, (CO-STAR), which works with a national network of volunteer attorneys to offer free advice and advocacy to college students and professors. Lindsay is the author of the nationally syndicated column "Ask CO-STAR." He is also the author of the bestselling book, The College Student's Guide to the Law.

According to Stephany Hartman, MSTC Student Life & Athletic Coordinator, Lindsay gives an energetic, informative lecture by showing images of what not to do on websites like Facebook and MySpace. "He shares real websites with images of students doing inappropriate activities to show students what not to put on their profiles. He also tells the consequences of those actions and explains what students can post about themselves that won't get them in trouble," Hartman said. She added that Lindsay primarily wants students to walk away thinking about what their online activities can impact.

Lindsay graduated magna cum laude from Denison University, and received his J.D. from the University of Michigan. He teaches courses in Law and Literature at the University of Pennsylvania.
