MSTC Offers Summer Firefighter Academy
Train to Become a Firefighter in One Summer!

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) is now taking registrations for the Summer Firefighter II Certification Academy. The Academy is a 10 week, 162 hour fire service training experience for individuals 18 years and older who are interested in becoming a Firefighter and would like to have certification in both Firefighter I and Firefighter II by the end of the summer. Courses include Firefighter I, Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Operations. The Academy courses will be held Monday through Thursday evenings from June 4-August 10.

Training includes live burn situations, vehicle fires, hazardous materials spill, incident command situations, job-shadowing career and volunteer firefighters and hands-on exercise at area fire departments and in the classroom. Successful completion of the Firefighter Academy and certification testing will provide students with entry-level fire preparation for a career fire fighting position.

According to Donnalee Hustedt, Associate Dean, Service & Health Division, the training experience may be completed alone or in conjunction with the Paramedic Technician Firefighter II program. “The summer scheduling allows individuals to attain their fire certification prior to beginning their paramedic classes and gain experience in the field while continuing to complete their paramedic degree.” Hustedt said the registration materials must be submitted by March 31 to be considered for this training opportunity. For further information about MSTC’s summer Firefighter Academy, contact Hustedt at (715) 422-5512 or via email at donnalee.hustedt@mstc.edu.
