WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) will host an international tour to Central Europe, May 24 to June 2. Megan Sokolowski, MSTC Communications Instructor, is one of the trip’s experienced tour leaders with this being Sokolowski’s tenth international tour. “All travelers over age 18 are welcome and do not need to be an MSTC student to join us,” said Sokolowski.
The tour begins with a flight from Chicago to Berlin, the capital of a reunified Germany. It took nearly a decade, from 1989 to 1999, to move the former capital of Bonn to the slowly reconstructed Berlin. Since the Wall came down in late 1989, the city has continued to evolve into a thriving metropolis. A tour of Berlin will highlight the historic Brandenburg Gate, which had become a part of the Berlin Wall until 1989, Victory Column and the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. An optional tour of Potsdam is available.
The tour continues by train to Warsaw, capital of Poland. Participants will be able to see first-hand the city's restoration after its near destruction during WWII. Visit the Historical Museum of Warsaw; walk along the Royal Way and see the Royal Castle at one end and Lazienski Palace at the other.
The tour will proceed to Krakow with a stop in Czestochowa to see the Jasna Gora Monastery, which houses Poland's beloved national treasure, the Black Madonna Icon. A tour of Krakow's lovely medieval city and an UNESCO historical sight will include Wawel Cathedral and the Royal Palace. Travelers will be able to spend time in the Rynek Glowny (Grand Square) and shop at Cloth Hall, the world's oldest shopping mall. Tour participants will have the option of a side trip to Auschwitz, Poland’s infamous concentration camp.
As the tour continues to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, travelers will pass through Wadowice, John Paul II's birthplace. In Prague, participants will visit Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, the Charles Bridge, Mala Strana and the Jewish Quarter.
The adult fee for the Central Europe tour is $2,536 (double occupancy) and includes round-trip
airfare from Chicago to Berlin/Prague; lodging (all hotel accommodations have private baths); continental breakfast and dinner daily; full-time service of a multilingual tour director; sightseeing tours and visits to special attractions. A single adult occupancy and student (ages 18-22) rates are also available.
The tour group will meet at least once in central Wisconsin prior to departure. More details are available by contacting Sokolowski at (715) 422-5486 or via email at megan.sokolowski@mstc.edu.
