WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Area residents interested in a high demand medical career with short-term training may enroll in Mid-State Technical College’s (MSTC) Nursing Assistant program. Classes will be offered at the college’s Marshfield, Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids campuses beginning December 26 and continuing through January 12. Donnalee Hustedt, Associate Dean in the Service & Health Division, says this session of Nursing Assistant classes will be offered in an accelerated format and recommends individuals apply now and register during the week of Thanksgiving. “Students will be able to pick up their books and workbooks to complete their independent study portion of the class prior to the beginning of classroom and lab instruction which begins on December 26.”
According to Hustedt, nursing assistants, sometimes called nurse aides or attendants, are in high demand to assist in the care of patients in hospitals, extended care facilities and home care situations. “Nursing assistants work under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Their responsibilities vary, but personal care and emotional support of patients are always primary considerations,” said Hustedt. “They are often the front-line, patient-care providers who perform basic nursing services for the ill, injured or disabled,” she added.
Nursing Assistant is a 126-hour program which includes independent study, campus lab experiences and 56 hours of clinical practicum such as working in healthcare agencies with patients and residents. Students who successfully complete the training become eligible to take the national exam leading to status as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Hustedt says nursing assistant jobs are plentiful in hospitals, long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, private homes or outpatient settings. “Once our students have successfully completed the 126-hour Nursing Assistant training, most have a job waiting for them,” said Hustedt. She added that many students use the Nursing Assistant training as a stepping stone to other healthcare careers, such as emergency medical technician, licensed practical nurse or registered nurse.
