WISCONSIN RAPIDS –Central Wisconsin residents interested in packing a lot of garden into a small space or creating an intimate garden within a large lot can discover the “how to” through a presentation by renowned horticulturist Melinda Myers at Mid-State Technical College (MSTC). Myers will present Small Space Gardens on Saturday, October 21 from 10:00 a.m. until noon at MSTC’s Wisconsin Rapids campus, 500 32nd Street North. The fee for Myers’ presentation is $15. Seating is limited and the registration deadline is October 16.
Myers will share tips and techniques for designing and maintaining gardens with year-round interest in every layer from the ground to the roofline. She will also cover general concepts and specific plants suited to the region. Myers, best known for her gardener-friendly and practical approach to gardening, has over 25 years of horticulture experience in both hands-on and instructional settings. She has a master’s degree in horticulture, is a certified arborist, started the Master Gardener program in Milwaukee and is a horticulture instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College. When Myers isn’t teaching, she is often busy educating the public about plants. She hosts “Great Lakes Gardener,” seen on PBS stations throughout the Midwest and “The Plant Doctor” on WTMJ-Radio. She also writes the twice-monthly “Gardeners’ Questions” column for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Myers is a contributing editor and columnist for Birds & BloomsandBackyard Livingmagazines. Myers has written 19 gardening books, including her most recently released Small Space Gardens. She will answer questions and sign books after her presentation at MSTC.
Myers’ presentation, Small Space Gardens, is the first in a series of presentations from MSTC’s Wisconsin Urban Forestry Education Center. According to Ron Zillmer, Associate Dean, the Center was developed as a natural extension of the college’s Urban Forestry Technician program. “We identified a gap in training opportunities for non-degree students. The Wisconsin Urban Forestry Education Center meets that training need for master gardeners, industry training, professional upgrade seminars and public education.” Zillmer says the MSTC Foundation sponsors the training center, with the primary funding initially provided by Wisconsin DNR Urban Forestry grants. “Funding has been matched with volunteer time, material, labor and equipment donations. Our greatest resource for this project is our volunteer planning committee of leaders in the urban forestry profession from across Wisconsin,” said Zillmer.
Pre-registration is required for Melinda Myers’ October 21 presentation at MSTC. The registration deadline is October 16 and the fee is $15.00. The registration form is on the college’s web site at mstc.edu.
